I had an interesting encounter at work this week. I was sent to a jobsite to help another worker who was renovating a bathroom. As we worked he began telling me about an old injury in his back which had never healed and was now flaring up causing him pain. His injury caused some tendons in his back to be over stretched and the doctors said it could not be healed. I listened to him and then said "Lets pray." He said, "Oh yeah, lets do that." This man is a "ready to pray" kind of person and joined in on the prayer. Part of his prayer was to release cares he had taken on. He seemed to be self-diagnosing spiritual roadblocks to his own healing as the Lord showed him! When he finished, I told him that God can reverse old injuries, so I prayed that God would reverse any injuries he had and cause those parts of his back to be well. I knew he received because his face lit up and he smiled and gave me a big hug! Then we got back to work. He didn't mention about how his back felt then, but a couple of days later he texted that his back felt better that day and even better the next, and that it was healed! Thank you Jesus!

Here's what I took from this experience: not everyone is able to receive from God as well as this man did. Not everyone is able to look at themselves and see the roadblocks and say, "Maybe I should get rid of this issue in my life that God is showing me." Maybe they haven't heard about spiritual "roots" or "roadblocks" that could be hindering the healing process. They might need to expand their understanding spiritually so they can find out what might be causing the sickness.

When people come for prayer at Healing Hub, they are looking for help with their understanding and they are also looking for something God can give them. But many don't know how to receive it themselves. People have heard that God still heals today but maybe they are still denominational in their thinking. We have people from many different churches come for prayer because they have not been taught about sickness and disease through God's word. Part of what we do is impart an understanding of God's healing, our faith, and teaching to those we pray for. We want to bless those with what God has done in our lives. God brought us through a very tough time because we had someone to pray for us and to help guide us to healing through God's word. We want to be that for others and give back to those who need help with healing.

Thankfully we can turn to Jesus. He is the fullness of wisdom and knowledge, He is called the power and wisdom of God. Our hope is to point people to Jesus, get them out of self-prescribed protocols, and to trust wholeheartedly in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Making our entire focus on Jesus and His finished work allows the faith for healing to take root in our hearts. So, how do we receive our healing?

The definition of the word "Receive" is to get something or to take something from someone legally. Legally, Jesus bought our healing for us, so we can go ahead and take it! If you are told you are getting a valuable check in the mail, you'll be at the mailbox everyday looking in there thinking, "Where is my money?" I want to receive it! In the same way, we can expect God's healing power in our life.

In Proverbs 2:1-9, we can see what God's idea of "receive" is. "My son, if you receive my words and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding, yes if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek for her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints."

In the first verse we find that He preserves the way of His saints, is a shield to the upright, has sound wisdom to help you overcome. We need wisdom. And then in verse 9, when you understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path, then wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul. Have you ever had knowledge become pleasant to your soul? Discretion will preserve you, understanding will keep you and deliver you from the way of evil. Have you ever been delivered from evil when you didn’t know that evil was out to get you? You didn’t even know it was there or was coming, when the confrontation came, you found that you were delivered without you having to lift a finger. That is what this verse is referring to.

There are some key words that we need to define in Proverbs chapters 2 and 4. "Understanding" is one of the words. According to the Webster's dictionary, it is called the "intellectual faculty," where we obtain a great part of our knowledge, and to judge truth or falsehood, good or evil. It is knowledge or exact comprehension, discernment.

Another way to word it, is "exact comprehension." It's when we know in our heart that God gave a specific, exact, and discerning word to us. People need understanding about their situation, spiritually, so they can take action. We are here to show the love of God and lead people to that understanding. Once a person understands what's causing sickness or blocking healing, they start the process of transformation. Deliverance is what God has for them, through His word, and through prayer.

Here is a definition of discernment. The power or faculty of the mind by which it distinguishes one thing from another, as truth from falsehood, as virtue from vise. The next word is knowledge. Knowledge is a clear and certain perception of that which exists. Illumination of mind. When something becomes knowledge to you, that is what you agree with. You take it as truth, you put it in your heart, and it begins to grow! That is what we need to do with the word.

Here are some scriptures that show us why we need to run to the word of God as our source of truth in every situation.

  • Proverbs 4:4 "Let your heart retain my words. You have to receive it to retain it. Keep my commands and live. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding, hear my son and receive my sayings."

  • Proverbs 2 "Receive my words, treasure my commands within you." Here it says, "receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many."

  • Proverbs 4:10 "Hear my son or daughter, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many."

  • Proverbs 4:20 "Give attention to my words, Incline your ear to my sayings."

  • Proverbs 4:20 "My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh."

When we begin to immerse ourselves in God's word, our desires shift from seeking the worlds truth to His truth. It's the single-mindedness of our pursuit of Him that purifies our heart to hear God's voice clearly. This is why we need to pay attention to the truth of the word and not to the world. The things of the world can make your head go in a circle faster than a dog chasing its tail.

Let's summarize the process of receiving the word as we see it in Proverbs 2 and Proverbs 4:

  1. Hearing and receiving the truth of God, agreeing with His Words, and adopting them as your own. You take it, walk home with it-it is yours!

  2. Treasure His commands. Treat the Word like hidden treasures. Think "treasure hunt."

  3. Make it your heart's one desire, and cry out for discernment. If your heart is not involved it is difficult to see clearly the life in the word. You want to have "exact comprehension" about what the word is saying. We suggest studying in Greek or Hebrew, find the root of what God is saying.

The reason we may have lack of faith is because of the state of our mind, "If I am not convinced then my body won't be convinced." If I tell my body to be healed and it's not convinced yet, I still have some work to do. The physical body is always asking, "convince me." It's our goal to believe the truth and to plant that truth so deeply in our heart that our body recognizes it as the only truth. This is transformation from the inside-out.

So how do we move forward and take ownership of our healing? Find the knowledge of God, search for it as for hidden treasures. Find the promises of His word, He is faithful to fulfill those promises if we believe. If you are convinced of that, it won't be long before you realize the transformation will manifest in your physical body. It's truly about founding your life on the rock of revelation through the living word of God. That includes blessing, salvation, healing prosperity and everything God has promised us, His children.
