Wells are a primary water source and in many countries, the only source of drinkable water. They also were known by the local people as a resting place for tired travelers. People would camp next to wells. A dug out well that you didn’t have to dig was considered a blessing. Regional folks knew where the wells are and who dug them. Enemies would sometimes plug up the wells of their adversaries, making it difficult for them to survive. People also named the wells so that others would know which well they were referring to. Also wells where the Lord spoke to man were remembered in that way. The well is sometimes used as a word picture in scripture to give us spiritual understanding. Listen, if you would, to some of the scriptures as I read them and see if you can guess where our talk is headed…
Isaiah 12:2-4
2 Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; ‘For Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.’ ”
3 Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation.
Salvation in the Greek is soteria meaning, salvation, welfare, prosperity, deliverance, preservation, safety, to heal, and rescue.
Proverbs 10:11 - The mouth of the righteous is a well of life,
Proverbs 16:22 - Understanding is a wellspring of life to him who has it.
Proverbs 18:4 - The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.
Proverbs 25:26 - A righteous man who falters before the wicked Is like a murky spring and a polluted well.
Numbers 21:16 - From there they went to Beer, which is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”
Looks as though a well is a container in man which holds some type of water. Spiritual water according to Jesus. Holy Spirit (water). See if you agree.
John 4 - 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”(Holy Spirit)
11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water (Holy Spirit) ? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water (Holy Spirit) that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water (Holy Spirit) that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water (Holy Spirit) springing up into everlasting life.”
15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, (Holy Spirit) that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.
This is the water from the wells of salvation from Isaiah 12. Jesus came to fill us with His Spirit. But we had to be able to contain these waters through the new birth. Notice that wells are the containers that God supplied to man on the inside!
Jeremiah 17:13 - Jeremiah calls the Lord, The fountain of living waters.”
John 7:37 - Now on the last and most important day of the feast, Jesus stood and called out [in a loud voice], “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! 38 He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said, ‘From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of living water.’” 39 But He was speaking of the [Holy] Spirit, whom those who believed in Him [as Savior] were to receive afterward. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).
Isaiah 41:18 - “I will open rivers on the barren heights And springs in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water And the dry land springs of water.
Revelation 7:17 - for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Titus 3:5 - He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but because of His own compassion and mercy, by the cleansing of the new birth (spiritual transformation, regeneration) and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
2 Timothy 1:14 - Guard [with greatest care] and keep unchanged, the treasure [that precious truth] which has been entrusted to you [that is, the good news about salvation through personal faith in Christ Jesus], through [the help of] the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
So if the well and the water is within us, how do we draw water from the wells of salvation? How can we receive and experience all that God has for us which is already there?
The water represents the Holy Spirit. Here are some of the things that He has waiting for you inside:
1 Cor 12:4 - (9 gifts) of the Holy Spirit - Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Faith, Healing, Miracles, Prophecy, discernment of spirits, Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues.
Some of the things the Holy Spirit does and supplies are Joy, guidance, anointing, God's presence, comfort, direction, strength, counsel, teaching, resurrection, power, boldness, direction, revelation, prayer, advocates, testifies of Jesus, confirms His Word with signs following and more!
Here is how you begin to draw out the things of the Spirit. Praying in other tongues.
Jude - 20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up on [the foundation of] your most holy faith [continually progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit.
St. Paul says he prays in tongues more than you all! How desperate are you? Can you pray this way indefinitely? Yes! Is it hearing from God you need? Is it healing, miracles, comfort, peace? Pray in your perfect language God has given you! The devil can't figure out what is being said! It's encrypted! Pray God's perfect will. Experience this yourself!
Start right away, building yourself up in your most holy faith. If you don't have the gift of tongues ask and you shall receive, seek and you will find. You will get answers, you will be blessed!
